The comic triple

On May 9, 2014May 9, 2014 By paddyxavierLeave a comment

I have struggled for days to think what to start my blog with and then the fair maiden of fortune presented me with an execution that combined my interests of comedy and capital punishment and even coincided with the start date of my PhD.  I couldn't ignore her suggestion. On 1st May 1820, 5 men appeared on …

Newcastle Gaol 1828-1925
A History of Newcastle Gaol 1828-1925
In 2021-22 I was fortunate enough to work on a research project about the history of the shortlived Newcastle Gaol. The project, led by Dr Shane McCorristine of Newcastle University, found lots of amazing new details about the gaol and led to this website that I built for the team. It was a fascinating project to work on.

Execution Culture in Nineteenth Century Britain From Public Spectacle to Hidden Ritual
Available for sale. This edited collection offers multi-disciplinary reflections and analysis on a variety of themes centred on nineteenth century executions in the UK, many specifically related to the fundamental change in capital punishment culture as the execution moved from the public arena to behind the prison wall. By examining a period of dramatic change in punishment practice, this collection of essays provides a fresh historical perspective on nineteenth century execution culture, with a focus on Scotland, Wales and the regions of England. Available to order here.

My name is Dr. Patrick Low. I received my PhD in December 2019 for a thesis on capital punishment and post-mortem punishments in the North-East of England between 1752-1878. I am particularly interested in the reporting of executions in the press, post death practices on the body of the executed, the execution crowd and burial procedures. I have appeared on a number of episodes of BBC's Murder, Mystery and My Family and am available for other projects relating to my studies. My full time work is creating websites and films for my company Hellow (www.hellow.co) and through that I have also built websites for many academic projects, including a history of criminal corpses for the Wellcome Trust and most recently a history of Newcastle Gaol with Newcastle University and Dr Shane McCorristine. I am not quite as pretentious as my photo suggests and in my spare time I can be found messing about in the comedy group Hot Gulp. For any enquiries. please contact me on patrickxavierlow@gmail.com.
