The Times They are a Changing

On July 22, 2014August 6, 2014 By paddyxavier4 Comments

Bob Dylan once famously sang that 'The Times they are a Changing'. This felt bizarrely prescient this week as I spent most of my time furiously trawling through The Times archive before my free 30 day trial expires and saw the constantly shifting size and face of the paper over 100 years. Execution Culture in Nineteenth Century Britain From Public Spectacle to Hidden Ritual
Available for sale. This edited collection offers multi-disciplinary reflections and analysis on a variety of themes centred on nineteenth century executions in the UK, many specifically related to the fundamental change in capital punishment culture as the execution moved from the public arena to behind the prison wall. By examining a period of dramatic change in punishment practice, this collection of essays provides a fresh historical perspective on nineteenth century execution culture, with a focus on Scotland, Wales and the regions of England. Available to order here.

My name is Dr. Patrick Low. I received my PhD in December 2019 for a thesis on capital punishment and post-mortem punishments in the North-East of England between 1752-1878. I am particularly interested in the reporting of executions in the press, post death practices on the body of the executed, the execution crowd and burial procedures. I have appeared on a number of episodes of BBC's Murder, Mystery and My Family and am available for other projects relating to my studies. I also created the website www.criminalcorpses.com for a brilliant Leicester University & Wellcome Trust Project. I am not quite as pretentious as my photo suggests and in my spare time I can be found messing about in the comedy group Hot Gulp. patrickxavierlow@gmail.com
